Rwanda’s president affirms commitment to peace agreement

(MENAFN) Rwanda’s president has affirmed his country’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations under a newly signed peace agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo, brokered by the United States.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the accord was finalized in Washington, President Paul Kagame expressed gratitude for the American role in facilitating the deal, which many see as a potential turning point in the prolonged instability affecting eastern Congo.

At a press conference held in Kigali, Kagame acknowledged the Trump administration’s efforts, noting that the peace process addressed three central areas: political dynamics, security challenges, and economic concerns.

The June 27 agreement sets out a framework for halting hostilities between the militaries of the two neighboring nations. It tackles the Democratic Republic of Congo’s major demands, including upholding its sovereignty, disbanding armed factions, and initiating efforts to establish lasting peace in the volatile region.

“We have agreed to do a number of things together with others, and we will do that. You will never find Rwanda at fault with implementing what we have agreed to do, you will never. But if the side we are working with plays tricks and takes us back to the problem, then we deal with the problem like we have been dealing with it,” Kagame stated.

He emphasized that the root causes of the conflict largely stem from external factors and warned that the success of the deal will depend heavily on sincere cooperation among all involved parties.

“I’m thankful to President Trump’s decision. By the way, even if it doesn’t work, I don’t think they (US) should be the ones to be blamed because in the end they are not the ones to implement what we have agreed. It’s our task for us in the region DRC or Rwanda to implement their part of the bargain,” he added.
