DR Congo Army, M23 Rebels Trade Attacks Amid Peace Talks

(MENAFN) According to reports, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s military has accused M23 rebels and allied forces of carrying out deadly attacks in the country’s east, even as internationally mediated peace talks continued in Switzerland.

The Congolese army claimed that rebel-linked forces, together with the Rwandan military, launched assaults on its positions in South Kivu province. The alleged incidents reportedly took place while diplomatic discussions between the government and the AFC/M23 rebel group were being held under mediation outside the country.

The most recent round of negotiations, facilitated with international involvement and relocated from Doha due to wider regional instability, concluded with tentative agreements on humanitarian access and prisoner exchanges. Both sides reportedly agreed to release detainees within a short timeframe and to allow the delivery of aid without obstruction.

However, shortly after the talks, the Congolese military reported renewed violence, stating that drone strikes targeted army positions and nearby civilian areas. Authorities said several civilians were killed and others injured, with women and children reportedly among the victims.

No official response was immediately issued by Rwanda regarding the accusations. Meanwhile, the M23 movement has previously denied similar allegations and has accused government forces of violating ceasefire arrangements.

Separately, representatives linked to the rebel group claimed that government forces had conducted artillery or drone strikes in other contested areas, causing damage and endangering civilians, according to statements shared on social media.

The M23 movement remains a central actor in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, where it controls significant territory and has been repeatedly accused by regional and international observers of receiving external support. The fighting continues despite multiple ceasefire efforts aimed at stabilizing the region and advancing political negotiations.
